Launched in 2009 as a joint policy initiative, the Eastern Partnership (EaP) aims to deepen and strengthen relations between the European Union (EU), its Member States and its six Eastern neighbours: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.
In 2019, the Eastern Partnership celebrates its 10-year anniversary. Over the past decade, the collective efforts of the EU and the partner countries have brought considerable benefits to the citizens including more trade, mobility, increased economic development and better quality of life.
2019 is a special year also because the Council of Europe reached 70.
Seventy years in protecting human rights, democracy and the rule of law have taught us that whilst times change and progress is made, our job is never done. Today is much different from the world in which the Council of Europe was born, but history shows that the mistakes of the past can be repeated. Armed with the expertise of all those years, we are ready to keep up the job of building the best life for every European, defending the gains we have made and meeting the challenges of the future.
