Got my GZ-HD7US end Nov ’07 and it’s made me see things with a different eye! Works great under good lighting but needs manual tweaking when used in low-light as seen in this clip. A fluid-head video stand will be your best friend with this cam. Bit of shame on JVC’s weak OIS. And a higher capacity battery is well advisable upon purchase.

The HD7 is an unusual kind of beast with its recording formats. It captures HDV Mpeg2 to Hard Drive instead of the usual tape. The fact that you can select and import instantly in whichever format you wish – is a priceless breakthrough feature for both director and editor. Both PowerMac G5 and MacBook Pro had no problem reading the .TOD files after installing JVC’s Quicktime Plugin.

IMPORTANT UPDATE! April 20th ’08

http://www2.cli.co.jp/products/ne/update_qtc_for_gzhd7/qtc3e_update.htm

JVC’s finally released an update on their Quicktime Plugin for QT version 7.4.x This will enable TOD files preview on latest version of Quicktime for further Export / Conversion options if you’re on Quicktime Pro. Previous Quicktime versions suffered security problems which is fixed in version 7.4.x Your OS X system will need new version of Quicktime for smooth and secure audio video playback especially within applications. Click on Software Update to see if you need the update. The plugin supplied by JVC in the default software install disk is only valid until version 7.3.x

Daylight shoots is bright and crisp upon playback on my 46″ Samsung M8 1080p LCD TV. But its also on this big monitor that the 2 dead pixels jumped out too obviously like dead rats! One on 8 o’clock off centre, and the other at 2 o’clock. I’m sure you see it in the contrast shot between the dark closet and floor lamp clips. I’m gonna have the cam exchanged for new one.

From opening a new session to importing the pre-recorded video and audio clips, it took me less than 2 hours to get it to what you see here in Full HD.

Non-existing headphone out option can be manipulated via the AV output jack. I connected it to a portable Philips DVD player and that worked well viewing live footage on the 7″ LCD monitor and it sorted the missing monitoring audio at same time.

Based on experience, video folks never care much about audio when capturing videos. They/You will eventually lay new audio track over the original capture anyway. Unless if you working on live interviews.

I now use the HD7 with Røde SVM Stereo Video Mic or a Beachtek DXA-2S.

To address the OIS issue, I use a Bogen Manfrotto 561B Monopod. I shot Outland Records video with this setup. I also use Manfrotto 055xdb with a 128rc head which works wonders for both my DLSR and HD Cam. But the monopod makes a faster shoot & run setup.

** Audio here was recorded with Digidesign ProTools at 16bit/48KHz imported to Final Cut Studio where I consolidated random file footages to cover the song timeline.
