Video + Performance – March 2019

“[The screen] It exists in our normal space, the space of our body, and acts as a window into another space. This other space, the space of representation, typically has a different scale from the scale of our normal space.” – Lev Manovich Archeology of a computer screen (1995)

Measurability is a dance in relation to a computer screen. How can we perceive the space through the mediated image of ourselves mirrored through a webcam?

Performed in front of a computer screen it aims at using a physical material – a piece of wood – and the body as means to measure the screen while in front of it. The implications of such movement allow for a displacement that is a perceptional folding of the screen onto the physical space, juxtaposing the ‘psychological squeeze’ with the ‘physical [detached] assault on the mechanism’ to comment on both from within (Krauss*). Historically considered a ‘virtual window’** that expresses the way we interact and perform ourselves in contemporary society [constantly being mediated by electric surfaces that propagate the image and location of oneself] the screen becomes the intermediary of a situation between the self and its extension within the digital sphere.

Also as part of LAND PROJECT (developed in collaboration with Lisa Parra), this individual action aims at experiencing the physical space is experienced through its representation, ‘sensorially making place and making sense of the place’ (Pink 2008***), within the framing and the image that is returned [thus the screen/machine – technologies] is an agent of transformation on the movement itself.
