The 2019 NFL regular season is in the books and with the Browns’ hiring Kevin Stefanski, all of the NFL head coaching vacancies have been filled. Some hires make more sense than others. Tom Downey is giving out his grades for the coaching hires made by the Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys, Carolina Panthers and Washington Redskins.
The Redskins and Panthers were the first to make their hires during the 2020 offseason. Carolina landed former Baylor head coach Matt Rhule while the Redskins scooped up former Panthers head coach, Ron Rivera. Rhule is known for turning Baylor’s program around and the Panthers are hoping Rhule can do the same for Carolna at the tune of $60 million over the next seven years.
Ron Rivera, on the other hand, was fired with four games remaining in the 2019 season after back-to-back disappointing seasons. Rivera has a proven track record with the Panthers including four playoff appearances, three division titles, and a Super Bowl appearance. Riverboat Ron brings the Redskins a long overdue culture change.
Mike McCarthy and the Cowboys get a B grade from Tom. The Cowboys finally got rid of the ulta-conservative playcalling of Jason Garrett, only to hire (what some suggest) is yet another conservative and safe head coach hire. The key to McCarthy’s success in Dallas lies in his ability to develop QB Dak Prescott and prove that he has, in fact, changed and adapted since his time with the Green Bay Packers.
The Giants decision to hire Joe Judge leaves you scratching your head. Since firing Pat Schumur, all signs pointed to the Giant hiring Matt Rhule as their next head coach. Instead, the Giants went with former New England Patriots special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach Joe Judge as their new head coach. It’s certainly a considerable jump from coordinator to head coach, so Judge will have his work cut out for him next season.
