Like the title says, the Livermore, California, Centennial Lightbulb has been on for over 100 years. This American made Shelby lightbulb is nothing special, just a carbon filament in a glass vacuum bulb, nothing special, that is, unless you consider it is the oldest, continually burning lightbulb in the world as being special.

The Livermore FD are the custodians of this amazing relic, and retired Fire Chief Thomas Bramell and Station Captain Curtis Dickey were kind enough to walk me through the crazy history of this electronic oddity.

“We used to hit it with nerf footballs, and swing at it when we left the station,” Chief Bramell recalls decades ago before anyone paid attention to the bulbs age, “no one even gave it a second thought, and it held up all those years”.

The bulb has seen the great earthquake, two world wars, a landing on the moon, and countless other historic moments, while glowing continually. Its been studied by scientists and gawked at by countless tourists alike. You too can take a peek at the bulb and see if its still burning at its own webcam: http://www.centennialbulb.org/photos.htm

When asked what the future might hold for this little bulb Chief Bramell says “oh it’s got another hundred years or so”. His optimism beautiful and pure. I suggest grabbing a copy of his short book about the bulb an the interesting history around it at http://www.blurb.com/books/6219248-a-million-hours-of-service
